Recently, during the fishing contest, I didn’t manage to complete the achievement within one hour. After analyzing the reasons, aside from luck, it must have been because I wasn’t using the artifact fishing rod, and I lacked the confidence boost. Today, I’ll share how to obtain the artifact fishing rod, Underlight Angler, so everyone can win the fishing contest mount next week.

Requirements for Obtaining the Artifact Fishing Rod

The requirements are actually quite simple. You need to fish up 18 types of fish in the five zones of the Broken Isles (completing the Bigger Fish to Fry achievement) and obtain the Luminous Pearl. After completing the quest associated with the Luminous Pearl, you'll receive the rod. The achievement is hidden, so it won’t appear until you start working on it.

The tricky part is that for most of the 18 fish, you need to fish up specific bait from the corresponding fishing spots, and then use that bait to fish for the required species. Without further ado, here’s the checklist. Just follow my route through the zones. Many of the fishing spots are in the middle of bodies of water, so don’t forget to bring Water Walking potions, or team up with a Shaman, Death Knight, or a Hunter with a water strider mount.

Step 1: Go to Dalaran (Broken Isles) and fly to the small island with a pond nearby.

There’s an optional quest here. Currently, in this pond, you can fish for an item called Drowned Mana. Use the Drowned Mana to trade with the NPC to get Arcane Lures. Then, use these lures to fish up the special bait for each fish type. At first, this may seem confusing, but don’t worry, it’s quite simple. If you don’t want to rely on luck, stock up on Arcane Lures.

Step 2: Fish by Region to Complete the Bigger Fish to Fry Achievement

Azsuna:
Key tip: Always use Arcane Lures when fishing for bait in this zone.

• Tip: You can buy the Rusty Queenfish Brooch from the Auction House to summon Ghostly Queenfish schools. Besides catching Ghostly Queenfish, you will likely fish up all three baits needed for this area. Any extra items can be sold on the Auction House. I bought all three items and fished them up again, so I broke even!

Val’sharah:
No special tricks here. You can directly buy the bait from the Auction House; expect to spend around 3,000 to 4,000 gold.

Highmountain:
Tip: You can also buy the bait directly from the Auction House. If Salmon Lures aren’t available, you can buy Stinky Snaileye, log out and back in, and you may receive a buff that increases your chances.

Stormheim:
Tip: I recommend buying the Ancient Vrykul Ring from the Auction House. You’ll likely fish up the bait quickly, and might even break even.

Suramar:
No special tricks here. You can buy what you need from the Auction House to save time.

After completing these steps, you will receive the Bigger Fish to Fry achievement!

Step 3: Luminous Pearl Quest

Once you have the achievement, stay in Suramar and fish from the Black Barracuda schools until you fish up the Luminous Pearl, which will give you a quest.

Follow the quest chain to continue. At one point, the questline may seem to break. When this happens, just run around Dalaran until Nat Pagle shows up to give you the next part of the quest.

Continue following the questline, and for the final step, an NPC in Dalaran will reward you with the Underlight Angler!
